A government of too many laws and not enough men.
“In a government of law and not of men, no man, no mob, however unruly or boisterous, is entitled to defy the law.” - John Kennedy
But what about the men making those lovely little laws? I supppose technically they’re not really men. I’m going to put a finer point on it. They’re what we call on the street, “somebody’s be-atch.”
So Kennedy was right, although not in the way he thought, we are in fact a nation of laws and not of men. And that’s the problem.
If we had some elected officials that were men they wouldn’t collapse into the fetal position and start mumbling memorized amendments to the tax code at the first sight of an irritated lobbyist.
Where are all the sweeping reforms? Where is the fiscal conservatism that Bush promised?
It looks like the Republicans are no different than our previous “mob bosses” known as the Democrats. Power corrupts?
If you think by simply electing your favorite party any of our problems are solved you’re wrong. They share one common trait: they all dreamed as a child that they could “fix” our problems by legislating.
The only way to control them is to take away their power. It’s like a child with a gun. They promise they won’t use it maliciously, but deep down we know they can never be trusted with it.
Similarly, the government can never be trusted with laws or money.
They all want to legislate. They all want to spend. They love it. Legislating and spending is like homeade ice cream and good sex to these men and women. It is what they live for and we die for.
And who gets to pay the piper? You do. Look at the automatic deductions they take from your check. They don’t ask if you’re getting good service, just like the mob, they take it.
Why not allow all over us to write a check at the end of the year? Is the U.S. government worried we might not like the level of service we’re getting for our buck?
Garth Brooks said it best when he was on the campaign trail, “I thank God for unwritten legislation and unanswered prayers.”
Okay, maybe he didn’t say that, but it would make a better song!
